Special screening of the documentary film "Lesha" (in Russian, with English subtitles)

Summer 2010. The central part of Russia is suffering from fires. About one hundred and thirty villages and townships are burnt down. Nearby towns and roads are shrouded in thick smother. The maker of the film travels to the epicentre of these events along with the volunteers. The story of Lesha is a story of a person burning away in his village. He is not a hero in the traditional sense of the word, but it is his life and his story.

After the screening we will discuss the film with the Russian film-maker and the director of the Russian documentary film festival “Flahertiana”, Pavel Pechenkin. Then there will be a small cocktail party.

“Houghton Revisited” exhibition: The Walpole Masterpieces from Catherine the Great’s Hermitage (17 May - 29 September 2013)

The magnificent art collection of Great Britain’s first Prime Minister, Sir Robert Walpole, sold to Catherine the Great, Empress of Russia, in 1779, to adorn the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, is reassembled in its spectacular original setting of Houghton Hall for the first time in over 200 years.

Masterpieces by Rembrandt, Poussin and Velazquez are among a collection of over 40 works from the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg which travel to Britain for a once-in-a-lifetime exhibition “HOUGHTON REVISITED: The Walpole Masterpieces from Catherine the Great’s Hermitage”.

The “Houghton Revisited” exhibition runs till 29 September 2013 and gives a unique opportunity to view one of the most famous art collections of XVIII century Europe. The display will include paintings from the English, French, Italian, Flemish and Spanish schools, with masterpieces by Van Dyck, Poussin, Albani, Rubens, Rembrandt, Velazquez and Murillo.

Houghton Hall, now the family seat of Sir Robert Walpole’s direct descendant, the 7th Marquess of Cholmondeley, is considered one of the country’s finest Palladian houses.

The inherited debts of Robert Walpole's grandson, George Walpole, the 3rd Earl of Orford, were the main cause of the sale of such a large number of paintings from his collection to Empress Catherine the Great. Arrival of the Walpole collection in St. Petersburg in 1779 was an important event in the Hermitage history. Sir Robert Walpole's paintings greatly expanded the Imperial collection.

The paintings in the Houghton Revisited exhibition will be hung in their original positions in the State Rooms, bringing them back to the splendour of more than two centuries ago.

The exhibition is a fitting celebration both of 250th anniversary of Catherine the Great’s accession to the throne, and the long and distinguished history of Anglo-Russian cultural relations. This is a unique opportunity for everybody to revisit a moment in British history of supreme diplomacy, shrewd dealership, lavish spending and exceptional collecting. Экспозиция включает более сорока живописных произведений из коллекции Эрмитажа, которые более двухсот лет назад, в 1779 г., были проданы всероссийской императрице Екатерине II британским первым премьер-министром Робертом Уолполом и составили важную часть коллекции Эрмитажа. Помимо шедевров из коллекции Эрмитажа, выставку дополняют работы  из других российских и зарубежных музеев, в частности из Государственного Музея Изобразительных Искусств им. Пушкина в Москве, ГМЗ Царское Село в Санкт–Петербурге, Национальной Галереи в Вашингтоне и музея Метрополитен в Нью-Йорке.

Роберт Уолпол, первый граф Орфорд (1676- 1745), занимавший должность первого премьер-министра Британии во время правления королей Георга I и Георга II, был одним из крупнейших европейских коллекционеров живописи, состав его собрания отражал художественный вкус английского коллекционера начала XVIII века. Основатель галереи разместил лучшую часть своей коллекции в Хоутон-Холле, родовом загородном поместье, расположенном в графстве
Норфолк.

В конце 1778 года, прямой наследник сэра Роберта, обремененный долгами внук,
Джорж Уолпол, был вынужден продать коллекцию русской императрице
Екатерине II. Так, императорская галерея значительно пополнилась
выдающимися произведениями европейских мастеров XVII столетия.

Являясь одним из самых знаменитых собраний западноевропейской живописи, коллекция представляет работы английской, французской, итальянской, фламандской и испанской школ, в том числе работы Ван Дейка, Пуссена, Альбани, Рубенса, Рембрандта, Веласкеса, Мурильо и других авторов. 

Выставка дает уникальную возможность увидеть произведения из знаменитой британской коллекции на родине основателя в их былой экспозиции в оригинальных интерьерах поместья Хоутон.

“The Rite of Spring” ballet at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées (on 29-31 May 2013)

We invite you to the ballet “The Rite of Spring” performed by the troop of the Mariinsky Theatre (St-Petersburg, Russia). It will take place on the scene of the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées (Paris, France) – where it was performed for the first time, on May 29 in 1913. The Guardian wrote about it: “It is one of the great works of the 20th century, a ballet so revolutionary it is said to have caused a riot at its premiere”.

The Rite of Spring (French: Le Sacre du printemps, Russian: «Весна священная») is a ballet and an orchestral concert work by the Russian composer Igor Stravinsky. It was written for the 1913 Paris season of Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes company, with choreography by Vaslav Nijinsky and stage designs and costumes by Nicholas Roerich. Although designed as a work for the stage, with specific passages accompanying characters and action, the music achieved growing success as a concert piece and later became recognized as one of the most influential musical works of the 20th century.

In the performance at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, which will take place on 29-31 May 2013, you will have a unique opportunity to admire original music of Igor Stravinsky. More than that, the dancers of the Mariinsky Theatre, directed by Valery Gergiev, will present original Vaslav Nijinski’s choreography.

Балет «Весна священная» на сцене театра Елисейских полей (29-31 мая 2013г.)

На сцене театра Елисейских полей  29-31 мая 2013г. балет «Весна священная» в оригинальной хореографии В.Нижинского. Для Вас танцует труппа Мариинского театра (Санкт-Петербург). Оригинальная музыка И.Стравинского.

Впервые балет был показан в рамках «Русских сезонов» С.Дягилева 29 мая 1913г. Спектакль рисует картины жизни языческой Руси. Декорации для спектакля создавались Н.Рерихом.

Сюжет как таковой в балете отсутствует. Содержание «Весны священной» И.Стравинский представил так: «Светлое Воскресение природы, которая возрождается к новой жизни, воскрешение полное, стихийное воскрешение зачатия всемирного».

Премьера спектакля вызвала неоднозначную реакцию публики. Зрители были шокированы необычной, ломающей старые стереотипы и написанной против канонов музыкой. 

Господствующей стихией балета стал ритм — гипнотический, все себе подчиняющий.  Он царил в необычной, полной стихийной силы музыке, управлял движением согнутых, как бы придавленных к земле людей. Всё было подчинено идее создания картины постепенного пробуждения природы, от первых робких ручейков к бушующей радости весны. В зале раздавались свистки, гудки автомобильных клаксонов, звон велосипедных звонков, смех и шум. Чтобы усмирить расходившиеся страсти, С.Дягилеву даже приходилось несколько раз гасить свет в зале, и все же публику утихомирить не удалось. Спектакль были вынуждены остановить. Позже И.Стравинский вспоминал: «Я воздержусь от описания скандала, который она («Весна священная») вызвала. О нем слишком много говорили...»

«Петр Первый. Великий Реформатор»: выставка в Эрмитаже, г.Амстердам (9 марта-13 сентября 2013)

Эрмитаж-Амстердам организует выставку, вдохновленную жизнью и личностью Петра Великого (1672-1725). Экспозиция «Петр Первый. Великий Реформатор», в состав которой включены более 660 произведений изобразительного и прикладного искусства, предметов вооружения и военной амуниции, приборов и инструментов, памятников нумизматики, документов, книг и природных редкостей из собрания Государственного Эрмитажа, призвана показать многогранность личности первого российского императора, выдающегося правителя и военачальника, мореплавателя и коллекционера, любознательного и неутомимого труженика, владевшего различными ремеслами и проявившего талант во многих отраслях человеческой деятельности.

Выставка состоит из пяти разделов: «Истоки», «Победы и  поражения», «Я ученик, и ищу себе учителей...», «Венценосный коллекционер», «Преображение России».

Выставка рисует образ неординарного, деятельного и любознательного русского царя. Вступив на престол в семнадцатилетнем возрасте, он был преисполнен решимости модернизировать страну. Ему удалось реорганизовать вооруженные силы, провести реформу церкви, расширить торговлю и промышленность, улучшить образование и здравоохранение. Петр I превратил Россию в могучую Европейскую державу, построив новую столицу Санкт-Петербург – «окно в Европу». С молодых лет царь собирал творения искусства, включая произведения Рембрандта, заложив тем самым основу для будущей коллекции Эрмитажа в Санкт-Петербурге.

Peter the Great, an Inspired Tsar: the exhibition in Amsterdam (9 March – 13 September 2013)

The Hermitage Amsterdam presents a major exhibition devoted to Peter the Great (1672–1725), the modernizer of Russia.

The exhibition paints a picture of this unconventional, inspired and inquisitive Russian tsar, who by the time he took power at the age of 17 was determined to transform his country. His achievements include reforming the military and the church, expanding trade and industry, and improving education and public health. He turned Russia into a great European power with a brand-new capital city: St.Petersburg, his “window on the West”.

With historical artefacts, paintings, gold jewellery from the ancient world, weapons and unique documents, the exhibition sketches the life of this peerless ruler. From his youth Peter collected art, including a Rembrandt, planting the seed for St.Petersburg’s later Hermitage collection. An enthusiastic traveller, he went two visits to Western Europe, including the Dutch Republic. It was the city of Amsterdam, in particular, that inspired him to found his new capital.

Peter befriended many leading figures in Dutch society, such as Nicolaas Witsen (mayor of Amsterdam), Christoffel van Brants (shipper, and grain and arms merchant), Albert Seba (apothecary and collector of natural curiosities) and Frederik Ruysch (physician, anatomist and botanist). Like a sponge, he absorbed what they taught him about shipbuilding, making instruments, carpentry, etching, dissection, pulling teeth, making paper, gardening, bookmaking, and much more. Find out how this knowledge bore fruit in Russia during your visit to Peter the Great, an Inspired Tsar. You will also find many of Peter’s personal effects, such as his suits and one of his coaches, which show how profoundly he was influenced by Western tastes.

The exhibition is based on the collection of the State Hermitage Museum in St.Petersburg, with additional pieces from the collections of museums and institutions in the Netherlands and elsewhere. The exhibition runs until 13 September 2013 at the Hermitage Amsterdam (Amstel 51) in Amsterdam.

Гала-концерт памяти Рудольфа Нуреева в Париже (31 мая, 1 июня 2013г.)

В  честь 75-летия со дня рождения знаменитого артиста балета и хореографа Рудольфа Нуреева парижский Дворец конгрессов приглашает Вас на два гала-концерта «Noureev & Friends», которые состоятся 31 мая и 1 июня 2013г.

Программу составили Шарль Жюд – большой и давний друг Р.Нуреева, директор балетной труппы Оперного театра Бордо, и Давид Махатели – солист Королевского балета Ковент-Гардена.

Идея концертов – показать, что великий мастер балетного искусства жив, что  его страсть, любовь к танцу, неповторимая пластика до сих пор являются источником вдохновения для многих современных деятелей балета. Концерты раскроют зрителям различные грани личности артиста: Нуреев как танцор, Нуреев как хореограф, Нуреев как директор французской балетной труппы Гранд-Опера.

Гала-концерты состоятся на огромной сцене Дворца конгрессов в оригинальной стенографии Жиля Папена, известного специалиста в жанре музыкальных представлений. Концерты будут сопровождаться показом архивных видеоматериалов, иллюстрирующих наиболее яркие моменты из жизни артиста.

В концертах примут участие солисты крупнейших балетных трупп – Парижской национальной оперы, Королевского балета Ковент-Гардена, Большого театра, Мариинского театра и др.

На юбилейные торжества в память Р.Нуреева приглашены выдающиеся деятели искусства хореографии, директора крупнейших балетных трупп и оперных театров, знаменитые артисты и кутюрье, а также Принц Альберт II и Принцесса Каролина (Монако). Среди приглашенных – Майя Плисецкая, Наталья Макарова, Владимир Васильев, Пьер Лакотт, Настасья Кински, Пенелопа Круз, Лайза Минелли, Карл Лагерфельд и многие другие.

The 75th anniversary of Rudolf Nureyev’s birthday in Paris

We are glad to invite you to the celebration of the 75^th anniversary of Rudolf Nureyev’s birthday that will take place in Palais des Congrès in Paris on the 31^st of May and 1^st of June 2013.

 

Rudolf Nureyev was a dancer of ballet and modern dance, one of the most celebrated of the 20th century. Nureyev's artistic skills explored expressive areas of dance, providing a new role to the male ballet dance. He was a star of the Russian and British Royal Ballet. He had extremely strong relations between Russia and France: the first country gave him the basis to be successful; the second became home at the end of his life.

“Nureyev & friends” is an exceptional dance gala celebrating the 75^th anniversary of Rudolf Nureyev’s birthday. This concert will show different facets of Nureyev’s life: Nureyev as a dancer, as a choreographer and as the Director of the Ballet of National Opera de Paris.

You will have a chance to see not only the best performances and the best roles of Rudolf Nureyev, but also archive images and testimonies illustrating the immense contribution of Rudolf Nureyev to dance and his impact to dancers who had a chance to work with him.
